Description
24” Antique Bisque Socket Head doll on composition and wood ball jointed bodyMarked D/Taft/1910/6
There is also an incised slash mark and dot near the rim of the head.
This mark is attributed to the James Scholly Taft Pottery Company of Keene, New Hampshire USA
There is some debate among collectors as to whether Taft produced the dolls here in America or Imported them from Germany. The Taft company was in operation from 1910-1917. So the 1910 mark is the model number but could also reference the date the mold was first produced.
This doll has not have chips cracks or hairlines in the head.
The brown sleep eyes have been reset and are just a tad loose.
A small amount plaster can be seen at the corner of the eye.
When you make him sleep and then reopen the eyes they sometimes stay back a little and you have to manually push them forward back into place. Shouldn’t be a problem if you leave the head stuffed but could be redone by someone with experience.
There are some unpainted areas around the rim of the head.
This dolly face model has eyelids and an open mouth.
Nice coloring.
The composition and wood body has an area of cracked, lifted and peeling paint including an area where the compo is exposed around the neck on the front of the torso.
Hands, Fingers and Toes are in good condition.
Typical scuffs and wear throughout body.
The face works well as a boy or a girl. Often dressed a boy because people associate Taft with the 27th President, William Howard Taft, who did happen to serve during the same time period this doll was made 1909-1912
Comes wearing the clothing shown which includes
Herringbone Tweed Jacket
Matching Pants
White satin shirt
Blue tie
Underclothes (has a stain)
Modern boots ( a bit small, seam has split on the back of one)
