Description

1977 Star Wars Wonder Bread Trading Cards, lot of 31, Excellent+ to Near Mint. “Used". Please use the photographs to evaluate the condition of each card. None is perfectly centered, some have very light corner wear and edge-wear. These all appear to have been mail-order cards rather than having been inserted into bread bags. These cards are from multiple sources and are the ones that I’ve declined to send in for grading. Shipped with USPS First Class.
One of the earliest food promotions for Star Wars involved a set of trading cards distributed inside Wonder Bread bags.
In terms of production, this is one of the rare card sets of the 1970s that had no association with Topps. The cards were actually produced by Wonder Bread. Many collectors also believe that this set was produced even earlier than their Topps counterparts, making this the first Star Wars card set to be issued.
The card fronts feature now familiar images bordered in black, while the plain white backs include the card number and a brief written description. Twelve of the cards featured characters, while the other four cards featured ships. Interestingly, some of the character cards include the actor’s name below the character’s name, while others don’t.
The named actors correspond with those who received billing on movie posters and other promotional materials (Hamill, Ford, Fisher, Cushing, and Guinness). There is nothing on the card fronts or backs to identify their association with the bread promotion, but each card bears a 1977 Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp., Inc. copyright on the back.
